VAULT training

What is VAULT?
VAULT is a documentary filmmaking project, giving young people from across the 5 Olympic boroughs the opportunity to produce a series of short films that explore the Olympics and what it takes to be an Olympic athlete.

If you are selected to take part in the project, you will be given professional film training ranging from narrative development, filming, to sound recording and editing - enabling you to be involved in the entire film-making process.

In 2009, the VAULT films explored life surrounding the Olympic Games past and present, with participation from 1948 Olympic veterans and hopeful British athletes currently training to compete at the London Olympics in 2012.

Many Of the VAULT filmmakers from 2009 have gone on to other projects including three who went on to win a Creativity, Culture and Education (CCE) media bursary; offered to just 18 young people throughout England. This Could Be You!

ASPIRE

VAULT 2010 looks to the future, under the theme of ASPIRE. This year, the films will have a strong focus on the athletes training and training centres and what competing means to them.

VAULT 2010 is now well underway!

Our new filmmaking recruits joined VAULT and Hi8Us South from all the corners of the 5 Olympic host boroughs over the half term week to learn about documentary story-telling and get some hands-on camera time. Our four filmmaking teams are now working over the next couple of weeks with their Kodak Zi8 cameras to capture footage for the stories they want to bring to our screens before coming back to us on November 13th to learn all the technical skills required when using professional filmmaking equipment and to put the finishing touches to their documentary story-boards.

Vault World Premiere Screening at The Barbican Centre

A good time was had by all at the World Premiere screening of the Vault films last Tuesday. The Barbican Centre played host to an evening of fun-fuelled film activity with the first chance to see the five completed films on the big screen. Along with the Vault filmmakers, all the 1948 Olympians attended and spoke about their experiences at the 1948 London Games.

Andy Barrow

Unfortunately, Andy Barrow, wheelchair rugby player, will not be able to attend the VAULT Premier Screening. He feels regretful about that fact and will definitely be missed on the day. Currently Andy has been selected to the World Championship Squad, so BIG CONGRATULATIONS from the VAULT Team. Vault Films chosen to mark 'Two Years To Go'!

We're very excited to announce that the Vault films have been chosen to herald the 'Two Years to Go' London Olympic celebrations. The five Vault Films will get their Premier Screening at the world renowned Barbican Centre on Tuesday 27th July. The screening will be attended by the many of the contributors from the film, including some of the original 1948 Olympians. It also serves as an opportunity for the filmmakers to catch up, discuss their progress since the projects completion and to input ideas for Vault 2010........

GOOD NEWS FROM VAULT; 3 vault Filmmakers Win CCE Media Bursary

Congratulations to VAULT filmmakers Muzzammil Hashmi, Nick Reilly and Bilal Ahmed who found further filmmaking success though winning a Creativity, Culture and Education (CCE) media bursary which is offered to just 18 young people throughout England. The MyView media bursary scheme will give the Muzzamil, Nick and Bilal the opportunity to work with professional filmmakers, make short films and develop new media skills.

Through the bursary scheme they will make films that express their views on challenging complex global issues, such as violent extremism, identity, and freedom of expression in the media and will equip them with the skills they need to articulate thoughts clearly and creatively and to gain confidence in using film.

We will be following their progress through this scheme and updating progress here.

Last Weekend Group 5 met Andy Barrow, GB Wheelchair Rugby Captain, at Lee Valley Athletic Centre (LVAC) for our the final (sniff) VAULT shoot.

Andy, already a Paralympic veteran - having competed in the Beijing games, talked to the group about his regime and how he's preparing for 2012. He demonstrated a few nifty moves in the chair - that the crew stunt-filmed from another - to simulate the speed and ferocity of a real Wheelchair Rugby game. The crew also learned that no player is game ready without a lot of gaffer tape!

VAULT training

As London hosted the very first Paralympic games in '48, the group asked Andy how he thought perception of them had changed. Andy praised the UK media for it's coverage and support of disabled athletics and expects it's audience to grow during London 2012.

LVAC was hosting a large scale athletics competition on the day of this shoot so the group had to patiently film the interview under very difficult circumstances. They took it in their stride like pros and hopefully the animated scene will only add to the finished film.

Our VAULTers have been very busy over the last few weeks exploring London's Olympics past and present...

Group One
Day One

Group One braved the great British weather to capture the memories of 1948 rower Robert Collins and 1948 diver Peter Elliott.

Day one saw the group at the East India Dock Basin where Peter Elliott treated us all to our very own live sing-along with the ladies of the group taking up backing vocals!

VAULT training

Day Two

On day two the sun came out as Robert Collins reminisced about his days as a rower and bumped into another 1948 Olympian down at Lea Rowing Club!

VAULT training

In the afternoon Clissold Pool was the perfect setting for Peter Elliott's tales of his diving and later career as a stuntman in The Avengers, bringing buckets of showbiz glitz and entertaining the whole crew!

VAULT training

Group Two
Day One

Group Two settled in to Newham Leisure Centre where Peter Bakare (GB Volleyball) showed us his muscles while being interviewed on the weights machine!

VAULT training

When George Weedon (1948 Gymnast) arrived he gave Peter a run for his money, putting his strength to the test with some good old-fashioned exercises!

VAULT training

Day Two

On the second day filming the group moved onto the Greenway at Stratford, to get some outdoor cutaway shots of the Olympic Main Stadium and Aquatics centre build.

Despite a torrential downpour the crew were able to film all the action from the observation tower at the visitor centre.

VAULT training

From this vantage point they captured some fantastic panoramic tracking shots of the construction site, for their film.

In addition the crew asked locals and visiting tourists about their views on the East London games and what they thought should happen to the Olympic park after 2012. These filmed interviews will also be used in the finished film.

VAULT training

Group Three
Day One

Group Three have planned for a more abstract look and feel for their documentary short. Their film ‘Running Thoughts’ aims to put the viewer in the mind of an athlete training for the Olympic games. To do this, the crew filmed on location at Lee Valley’s stunning athletics centre to capture the venue’s atmosphere as well as a variety of movements, shapes and sounds created by the training athletes around them.

VAULT training

In addition, the crew interviewed rising athletics star Rikki Fifton and ’48 Olympic veteran John Parlett, to hear about their training regimes and find out what goes through the mind of an athlete in competition.

VAULT training

For the next stage of the film’s production, the crew will add the sound recording to their visuals to create what may become VAULT’s very first art film? Watch this space...

VAULT training

Group Four
Day One

Our fourth group of budding filmmakers set up base at Mile End Stadium to film the action as two of Great Britain's 2012 hopefuls worked hard at training.

VAULT training

Perri Shakes-Drayton and Leevan Yearwood took up the starring roles, sharing their experiences with our VAULT team. "I want to be a role model for young sportswomen" Perri told us, and she certainly did inspire us all!

Day Two

On day two Dorothy and John Parlett, 1948 Olympic Track Veterans, welcomed us into their home for tea and a chat.

VAULT training

The crew learned all about the ‘innocent’ games where the Parletts first met and of the fabulous opportunities, including international travel, gala dinners as well as free Bovril, the pair enjoyed as Olympic stars of yesteryear.

Despite her traditional aspirations and sportsmanlike attitude, we couldn’t quite shake the feeling that Dorothy might have actually quite enjoyed taking gold and beating her rival, Fanny Blankers-Koen, in the process.

Group Five

The VAULT team are very excited to announce that in January our final VAULT film crew will be filming with GB Wheelchair Rugby Captain, Andy Barrow! Andy has already competed in Beijing and we can't wait to hear about how he's preparing for 2012. Watch this space...!

The VAULT team would like to say a big THANK YOU to all you fantastic VAULTers who took part in our training.

Well you interviewed, filmed, recorded, listened, commented, planned, brainstormed and certainly made the most of every moment - What an exciting week it was!

Q&A with Jo Wright, director of 'Atonement' and 'The Soloist'

VAULT training

See some more pictures here

On Monday you all got to grips with the cameras in a hands-on session, got those allimportant interview skills under your belts, learned all about the contributors and brainstormed to the max, putting together your film ideas.

On Tuesday we kicked off with some serious honing of those interview skills which you put to the test as two of our 1948 Olympians, John and Dorothy Parlett, joined us to put 1948 in the picture.

Members of the public also got a taste of your filmmaking talent as you took to the streets to film those fantastic vox pops!

To polish off the week Friday saw our most action-packed day yet: the buzz of pre-production meetings filled the centre as the teams all worked together to shape their ideas before the panel presentations. After you’d sharpened up your questioning skills we were all ready to greet our very special guest: Pride & Prejudice and Atonement director Joe Wright. Joe passed on his pearls of wisdom in our very own Q&A and was extremely impressed by the questions you had for him.

The training was a stonking success – the VAULT team can’t wait to see those films take shape!

A big THANK YOU to everyone who came along to the Brady Centre for our VAULT launch. Everyone working on the project thoroughly enjoyed the day and we hope you did too.

We were really impressed with the level of skill and imagination you showed and were delighted to see such enthusiasm and commitment to the craft of filmmaking!

See the results of all your hard work. We now have the films uploaded to the website so below you can find:

  • the VAULT pilot film
  • the Soundtrack film from Jake Walker’s workshop
  • the Animation films from the Salmagundi workshops
  • the ‘best bits’ film of the whole day’s activities
